Fraud Awareness Sessions at Public Library

02:00 PM — 03:30 PM

Every week we hear about a new form of fraud, usually spread by phone or email: ransomware, extortion, phony Canada Revenue Agency or bank calls, and more. Nearly 80 percent of mass marketing fraud is conducted by organized crime groups, and it's currently the second most common criminal activity funding terrorist activities. However, most mass marketing fraud is never reported.  Often the victims are too embarrassed to admit their losses.  But silence can allow the fraud to continue. For the second June installment of the KFPL Live monthly speakers’ series we are delighted to offer a presentation on Fraud Awareness by Tom Cheel from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).  Jointly managed by the RCMP, the Competition Bureau, and the OPP, the CAFC is the central agency in Canada which collects information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (e.g., telemarketing), advance fee fraud (e.g., West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints.  In his presentation Tom will outline the most common types of fraud and how you can protect yourself. This information will be of particular use to seniors. The presentation will take place twice:  first at Isabel Turner branch on Wednesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. and then at Sydenham branch on Thursday, June 27, at 2 p.m.   Both sessions will be the same, and both are open to adults and teens. There is no admission charge, but seating is limited.  To avoid disappointment, please register in advance at calendar.kfpl.ca/events or by phone at (613) 549-8888 as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 15.
