Domino Theatre presents: Deathtrap by Ira Levin

07:30 PM — 10:00 PM

DIRECTED BY MATT SALTON: Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney's plan, which he devises with his wife's help, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.   Start time: EVENING Performances 7:30p.m.   Final Saturday Performance: 2:00 p.m.                            Thursday, Friday, Saturday                                 DOMINO THEATRE        52 CHURCH STREET        KINGSTON, ONT.        K7M 1H3   Tickets available at:  a) The Grand Theatre box office 613-530-2050 b) Online at: http://www.kingstongrand.ca c) The Domino Theatre door on the night of the performance if tickets available (cash, credit and debit now accepted)   Seniors and members $16 Thursdays only at the Domino Theatre door.   Adults: $20    Students: $10    Children: $10

Are you a senior with a lifetime of memories you'd like to share?  You know you've got a story inside of you -- perhaps a memoir or a multi-generation family history.  Knowing how to go about telling your story is another matter.  Should you put it in writing or record your voice, and do you rely on your memory or fact-check everything?  It can be hard to know where to start.  If this describes your situation, then this hands-on workshop series by award-winning author Jean Rae Baxter may be for you. Starting on Thursday, October 3, at 2 p.m., Jean will meet with a small group of seniors for two hours each week and show how to create a narrative people will want to read.  You'll learn how to organize your writing project and how to write about your life experiences.  The tools of fiction will help you make anything -- a special person, place or thing -- memorable.  Be warned, though!  You'll learn by writing, and you should expect two to three hours of homework each week.  By the end of the fifth week (on Thursday, October 31), you'll have a story to share with family and friends, and to pass on to the next generation. This workshop series, to be held at the North Frontenac Telephone Company at 1019 Windwood Drive in Sharbot Lake, is open to all seniors, free of charge.  Since seating is limited, please register in advance, making sure that you'll be able to attend all five sessions.  Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, and you can register online at https://calendar.kfpl.ca/ or by phoning any KFPL branch.  You will be asked for your Kingston Frontenac Public Library card number when you register.  Please check the requirements for membership first at http://url.ie/1261o/ or by phoning (613) 549-8888 to speak with a staff member.  Memberships are free to all residents and taxpayers of Frontenac County or the City of Kingston, but non-residents will need to take out a subscription (minimum membership is $13 for three months). If you are ready to start telling your story, then please consider registering for this wonderful opportunity to kick-start your writing project! Note: This is a repeat offering of the workshops held at the Sydenham, Isabel Turner and Calvin Park branches in 2018.

This film seeks to raise awareness of the impact of ACEs and spark community action. It is a follow up to our recently released Community Insights report on ACEs. A short discussion will take place after the film. Free (Donations Appreciated). All are Welcome.

Domino Theatre presents: Deathtrap by Ira Levin

07:30 PM — 10:30 PM

Estate Litigation 101: Will, Guardianship & Power of Attorney Challenges

02:00 PM — 03:30 PM

With today's aging demographic the estate litigation world is expanding. In spite of careful estate planning and the choosing of a Power of Attorney, sometimes disputes arise.  Perhaps someone wants to challenge a will, or feels that the person with power of attorney is using the funds for their own benefit.  Sometimes a newly incapable parent needs to be placed in long-term care but their children disagree about the choice of home. How can these issues be resolved? At this installment of the KFPL Live monthly speakers' series, local lawyer Paul Andrews will discuss issues in estate litigation which are becoming increasingly important as our population ages.  Mr. Andrews will cover the procedural steps in disputing Powers of Attorney, applying for guardianship, or making will challenges, and he will review the grounds on which those strategies can be pursued.  This talk will be of particular interest to everyone with an estate plan, children who are managing their parents’ affairs, families coping with dementia, and anyone who is expecting to be a beneficiary under a will. This presentation will take place twice:  first at the Central branch on Thursday, October 10 at 7 p.m. and then at the Sydenham branch on Saturday, October 26 at 2 p.m.  Both sessions will be the same and both are open to adults and seniors. There is no admission charge, but seating is limited.  To avoid disappointment, please register in advance at calendar.kfpl.ca/events or by phone at (613) 549-8888 as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 28.

National Novel Writing Month

07:00 PM — 09:00 PM

Since 2007, November has been designated National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short.  Aspiring writers worldwide are encouraged to track their progress online as they try to produce 50,000 words in a new manuscript between the first and last of the month.  Focusing on quantity, rather than quality, the goal is to get writing, to write with a buddy or in a group, to combat writer's block, and to produce a substantial first draft that can later be edited and rewritten to form a finished novel or the first part of a novel.  By registering on the NaNoWriMo website writers can track their progress and connect with and encourage other writers, particularly in their own community.  Pep talks from published writers also help, especially when they come from authors whose published works originated in NaNoWriMo, like Erin Morgenstern (The Night Circus), Rainbow Rowell (Fangirl), and Sara Gruen (Water for Elephants).  Kingston Frontenac Public Library is again teaming up with Kingston NaNoWriMo to provide space for local writers participating in National Novel Writing Month.  In addition to four Write Ins during November, there will be two prep sessions in October.  At these two-hour sessions, adult and teen writers can meet with fellow writers to get some work done in a fun, supportive space with free WiFi and electrical outlets (and possibly a few snacks).  These are drop-in sessions and no registration is required.  This year's sessions at KFPL will be held:   Monday, October 7, at Central branch at 2 p.m. Monday, October 28, at Calvin Park at 7 p.m. Monday, November 4, at Central at 7 p.m. Monday, November 11, at Isabel Turner at 7 p.m.     Monday, November 18, at Calvin Park at 2 p.m. Monday, November 25, at Central at 2 p.m.   Questions? Telling Your Story: Seniors' Writing Workshop Series (Sharbot Lake)

02:00 PM — 04:00 PM

National Novel Writing Month

07:00 AM — 09:00 AM

Questions? KFPL Live: Canoe for Change

07:00 PM — 08:30 PM

For the past three summers Kingston retirees Glenn Green and Carol Vandenegel have canoed some 8,515 kilometres across Canada.  Already experienced paddlers, in this bucket-list project they've braved bears and high waves to follow old voyageurs' routes, experiencing breathtaking scenery, back-breaking portages, and perhaps a little more togetherness than many couples would find comfortable.  But although they were alone in their canoe, Carol and Glenn benefited greatly along the way from the kindness of strangers who offered them showers, beds and home-cooked meals. They've also used their journey to raise awareness of Kingston's Loving Spoonful and its vision of a food-secure community, provisioning themselves with fresh local food dehydrated at home, then shipped ahead along their route.  By the time they paddled into the Cataraqui Canoe Club this September 19 they had raised $23,000 and spread the word coast to coast.  Now they're sharing photos and stories of their trip with their home community, including during two KFPL Live presentations. Glenn and Carol will speak twice at library branches:  first at the Isabel Turner branch on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m., and then at the Calvin Park branch on Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.  Both presentations will be the same and both are open to adults and teens.  There is no admission charge, but seating is limited.  To avoid disappointment, please register in advance at calendar.kfpl.ca or by phone at (613) 549-8888, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 26.        Questions? Pax et Memoria 100 musicians onstage

07:30 PM — 09:30 PM

Orchestra Kingston combines forces once again with The Kingston Choral Society in a stirring evening calling for peace, remembrance and reflection, Saturday 9 November 2019 7:30pm, The Spire (82 Sydenham Street, Kingston K7L3H4). Tickets: $20/$25/$40 at Novel Idea, Tara Foods, Arden Music, choir and orchestra members, orchestrakingston.ca, kingstonchoralsociety.ca, and at the door. When these two musical forces last came together, they sold out every seat in The Spire for “The Messiah”, earning remarkable reviews for their “almost psychedelic” musical colour and energy (-Lucy DeCoutere, Kingston Whig-Standard).  “A huge group like this gives the performers energy and the audience can feel that energy,” explains Orchestra Kingston conductor, John Palmer.  Ian Juby, chorus master of the Kingston Choral Society, adds that, “Every time John and I bring the orchestra and choir together, it’s not just another choir experience for audiences but a unique thrill. I hope Pax et Memoria makes people want to come out and experience this big sound as we experience it.”

National Novel Writing Month

07:00 AM — 09:00 AM

Questions?
