New Dynamic Dispatching from City Transit

12:00 AM — 11:59 PM

The City of North Bay will be introducing a new, efficient and convenient public transit booking and tracking system beginning Jan. 24, 2021 with the launch of dynamic dispatching. This new transit service will operate throughout most of the City on evenings Monday through Friday between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and Sundays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. . Instead of traditional fixed-route service, riders will be able to download the myRide NBT Dynamic Dispatching app to book their trips. Using the mobile app, or telephone for riders without access to a smartphone, passengers can select a pickup and drop-off location and confirm their ride. Once a ride is booked, dynamic dispatching technology matches multiple passengers headed in the same direction into one bus and directs passengers to a convenient bus stop location. The myRide NBT app, which is now available for download at the Apple or Google Play store, will provide time of arrival information and allow for real-time bus tracking. North Bay Transit is partnering with Via to launch the new service as part of a one-year pilot project, which will be one of the largest of its kind using full-sized buses in Canada. Dynamic bus dispatching will be used during low transit demand times and in areas where fixed routes are most inefficient and expensive with the aim of reducing wait times, providing more direct trips and improving efficiency. As such, the service will be available throughout the City with the exception of the south end, which will continue to be serviced by two fixed routes. "We’re pleased to be introducing a new public transit option to our residents and we’re hopeful that this pilot project will lead to improved service and efficiency,” said Coun. Chris Mayne, Chairman of Council’s Infrastructure and Operations Committee. “It is timely that we’re exploring alternatives to conventional bus service during the pandemic at a time when demand has been drastically reduced. Dynamic dispatching could provide us with more flexibility to better adapt to the current situation.”

Rotary Catch-the-Ace

07:00 PM — 08:00 PM

Catch the Ace Lottery is a Progressive Lottery. Each week tickets are sold for the opportunity to select the Ace of Spades from a deck of 52 regular playing cards. Prior to the draw, each of the 52 playing cards were placed in brown envelopes. The envelopes were shuffled and numbered 1 to 52. When tickets are purchased the buyer chooses an envelope number  from a list of available numbers, then enters the number on their ticket. Each week one ticket is drawn. The holder of that ticket automatically wins 20% of that week’s sales. The envelope number noted on the ticket is opened. If the card inside is not the Ace of Spades the card is destroyed and is no longer available for future draws. If the envelope selected is the Ace of Spades then the lottery is finished and the ticket holder wins the weekly prize plus the Ace of Spades pot. Each week the Ace of Spades progressive pot grows by 30% of the weekly sales. Each week the lucky winner of the draw receives 20% of the weekly sales.

RFPQ issued for new Community and Recreation Centre

12:00 AM — 11:59 PM

The City of North Bay has issued a Request for Pre-qualification (RFPQ) to pre-qualify general contractors for the construction of a new community and recreation centre at the existing Steve Omischl Sports Complex on Lakeshore Drive. The purpose of the RFPQ is to shortlist general contractors with qualifications and experience to manage and oversee the construction of the facility, featuring dual-pad ice surfaces, a walking track, multi-use change rooms to service year-round activities and a multi-purpose community hall. The pre-qualification process is the first step in the procurement process for the potential construction of the new community centre.  Based on the evaluation of responses, qualified respondents will be eligible to participate in an invitational second-stage competitive process for the potential construction of the new community centre.  A pre-qualification stage of a procurement process is commonly used for construction projects of this scale. As previously communicated through the deliberations and passing of the 2021 capital budget, the second-stage (tendering) of the procurement process will be initiated upon final direction from Council. The submission deadline for the pre-qualification for the North Bay Community Centre General Contractors is March 15, 2021. For more information about the RFQ please visit: https://cityofnorthbay.bidsandtenders.ca/Module/Tenders/en
